PIOP, in the context of the principles of sustainable development, as they have been adopted by the Piraeus Bank Group, and in accordance with its statutory objectives, has developed and implements an Environmental Management System (EMS) for its buildings, certified according to EMAS and ISO 14001:2015 by an accredited external body.

According to the European EMAS Regulation:

  • PIOP is the only Cultural Foundation and Museum Network in Greece that has been certified by EMAS
  • It is one of the eleven organizations with Museums in Europe to have inscribed their sites on the EMAS Register
  • Out of the above organizations, PIOP is the largest in terms of number of sites, with twelve buildings inscribed on the Register

Moreover, in the framework of the Foundation's commitment to continuously improve its environmental performance and given that one of the important environmental aspects of its activities is the use of energy in the Museum buildings, PIOP designed, developed and implemented an Energy Management System (EMS), which has already been certified according to the ISO 50001 Standard. Initially, the System covers the buildings of the Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production of Lesvos and the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum Ν. & S. Tsalapatas in Volos, two of the most energy-intensive Museums of the Foundation, as well as the Museum of Marble Crafts on Tinos.

  • Environmental aspects

PIOP’s activities are characterized by specific environmental aspects and impacts, which are identified, recorded, systematically monitored and managed, with an aim to reduce the overall environmental footprint.

In general, the most important environmental aspects and impacts from the activities of the Foundation are the following:

  • The consumption of electricity and the consequent emissions of gas pollutants and other environmental loads
  • The consumption of fuel for heating of spaces, for the operation of auxiliary equipment and for business travel, as well as the ensuing emissions of pollutant gases
  • The consumption and management of consumables and especially paper, mainly by the central offices of the Foundation
  • The consumption of water by PIOP employees and visitors in the Museums, as well as the consequent production of liquid waste (domestic municipal sewage)
  • The emissions of fluorinated greenhouse gases from cooling and air-conditioning facilities
