Practical guidelines for the preservation of books and personal archives

Book

  • Place the books vertically on the shelf, never with the spine down or up, in such a way that they can be easily removed. Use bookends to support them. Place large books, over 40-45 cm, horizontally. In this case, place the largest in size under the smallest book, up to a maximum of three books. Also place horizontally any books with damaged bindings and those that do not remain rigid if placed vertically. Remove from the shelf only one book at a time. Pull it from the middle, not from the top of the spine. Support the cover of books when opening them, especially those that do not open more than 120 degrees, as well as books with folding parts. Leather bindings should not come in contact with fabric or paper covers.
