New publication "War as town-planner"

«Historical Centres», PIOP’s new publication series, is being inaugurated by architect Nikos Skoutelis’ book War as town-planner. The network of city-fortresses in the sea state of Venice, 16th-17th century. In this comprehensive work on the evolution of defensive architecture in Greek and Dalmatian coastal cities during the period of Venetian Rule, the author illustrates, from an anthropocentric angle, the influence of war on the urban and natural landscape. The publication covers the entire spectrum of town-planning evolution, from land use planning and architectural design through to the urban formation of historical cities such as Handakas (Candia), Chania (La Canea), Corfu, Zadar (Zara), and others. The volume’s iconographic documentation, which includes paintings, photographs, archival chartographic material and ground plans of the fortified cities and their evolution in terms of town planning, also provides information about their image, both in the past and today.
