This work addresses the question of how the Ottomans, a nomadic people, acquired a fleet – terror of the Western Powers – mainly through the re-operation of old Byzantine shipping houses and with the aid of Greek shipwrights. The types of vessels constructed in traditional Greek lands are presented in an Appendix, along with ample evidence.
