Tsalapátas, in Vólos (Thessaly).

The Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundations (PIOP) and the General State Archives-Archives of the Prefecture of Magnesia are organising a scientific conference and an exhibition on “The economic reconstruction of the Prefecture of Magnesia, 1945-1967”, on Friday 4th May (at 6pm) at the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum N. & S. Tsalapátas, in Vólos (Thessaly).

The action’s aim is to study the development of this prefecture over the period of economic reconstruction in the wake of World War II, in the manner that this was attempted through special programmes and the action of state agencies seeking to kick-start the country’s overall economy. The region of Magnesia, in Thessaly, constitutes a good example for studying the country’s reconstruction on a regional level as, before the war, it was an important production site in the agricultural, industrial and tourism sectors.

The reconstruction effort concerning the agricultural world is examined through the distribution of food aid and the approval of reconstruction loans to farming cooperatives and agro-industries. The reconstruction of the prefecture’s industry is studied through structures, such as the functioning of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Vólos and the creation of the Industrial Area of Vólos by the state-owned bank entrusted with the task of developing the country’s industry, but also through indicative examples of production units of the economy’s basic branches. Credit institutions and individuals worked to heal the “wounds” caused to the region's tourist reserve, both because of the war and due to the earthquakes that struck the region after in the post-war period.

The action, which also aspires to contribute to the study of local history, is accompanied by a temporary exhibition of archival material, held in the area of the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum’s Hoffman kiln and which will run through to the 31st October 2018. The exhibition documents its objectives historically using sources from PIOP’s Historical Archives, and the General State Archives-Archives of the Prefecture of Magnesia, the “L. & N. Sakellaríou” Historical and Folklore Museum/ Documentation and Communication Centre of the Municipality of Kardítsa, the Historical Archives of the Loúlis Mills and private collections.

Attendance is free of charge. Interested parties will be allowed in on a first-come first-served basis [tel. (+30) 210 3418011, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm].
