"Balkan Echoes
Sound Portraits from Southeastern Europe 1962–1987
Photo narratives by Martin Koenig"
Photography exhibition in the Silversmithing Museum
The Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, in cooperation with the Photometria International Photography Festival, starting from Saturday 28 September 2023, presents the photography exhibition titled "Balkan Echoes | Sound Portraits from Southeastern Europe 1962–1987 | Photo narratives by Martin Koenig" in the Silversmithing Museum, in the framework of this year's celebration of the European Heritage Days with the theme "Heritage of Routes, Networks and Connections".
In 1966, Martin Koenig, an ethnographer specializing in Balkan dances, armed with a letter of recommendation from the legendary anthropologist Margaret Mead, embarked on a long series of trips to the Balkans that would last 25 years.
Sometimes alone and sometimes with his colleague Ethel Raim, he researched and recorded the music and dances of the region's traditional communities at a time of peaking change brought on by technological advances, industrialisation and the subsequent wave of migration. The exhibition features Martin Koenig's wide-ranging photography as well as his narratives featuring stories of people he met, whose connection to music and dance was deep and whose sense of community was strong.
