Catalogue

DESCRIPTION

Catalogue of the First Sculpture Symposium of Tinos, which took place in the summer of 2016, on the initiative of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation.

The First Sculpture Symposium of Tinos is yet another manifestation of the part played by the Marble Crafts Museum in the island’s cultural life for many years now. Along with the numerous activities framing it, the Symposium crowned the recent inscription of Tinian marble crafts in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This significant acknowledgement was the result of close cooperation between the Foudnation and the Ministry of Culture and Sports, since the Sculpture Symposium was organized under the auspices of the Ministry.

Based on the fundamental relationship between the master craftsman and his assistant, the teacher and the student, that is the relationship that ensures the transmission and the creative recasting of lived knowledge, the Symposium brought together four graduates of the School of Fine Arts at Panormos on Tinos and four renowned artists: Theodoros Papagiannis, Giannis Kagiorgis, Praxitelis Tzanoulinos and Dimitris Skalkotos, who also undertook the curation of the Symposium. Working together for more than two weeks, they created original works of art on Tinian marble, sculptures that reflect different visual approaches and will be exhibited in the Museum.
