Η γυναίκα στο Βυζάντιο [Women in Byzantium]

Worship and art. Special subject of the 26th Symposium of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Archaeology and Art, Athens, May 12-14 2006

Edited by: Maria Panagiotidi-Kessisoglou

DESCRIPTION
The volume of the Proceedings of the conference on Women in Byzantium. Worship and art, held in the framework of the 26th Symposium of the Christian Archaeological Society, contains fifteen studies, which approach the subject from the paleo-Christian to the post-Byzantine period, examining the historical circumstances, the archaeological data, and the social and economic parameters within which women acted and expressed themselves. The historic study on "The status of women in Byzantium", by academician Angeliki Laiou (to whose memory the volume is dedicated), constituted the central communication; it is followed by six original studies by archaeologists; as well as the papers presented at the two Round Tables, on "Women's clothing and beauty care in Byzantium" and "Women's involvement in the foundation of monuments and the commissioning of artworks in Byzantium" respectively, draw up the new tendencies and perspectives of archaeological research on the evolution of the role of women in Byzantium.
