The Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP), in cooperation with the 15th Photometria International Photography Festival, organizes the photography exhibition titled “The Truth is in the Soil” by Ioanna Sakellaraki at the Silversmithing Museum.
The exhibition emphasizes the performative and imaginative aspects of mourning as a profession. Inspired by ancient Greek laments, after having lived for a time in the traditional communities of women mourners in Mani, the photographer searches for traces of mourning and sorrow.
As noted by the photographer herself, who has won distinctions at the Sony World Photography Awards 2020, among others: "After my father's death six years ago, which awakened memories of the way death is treated in Greece, I returned to my homeland and started investigating traditional burial rituals. {...} By consciously adding a new visual intervention to what has been documented as real, my images function as vehicles of mourning for the lost ideals of vitality, prosperity and belonging, trying to highlight something beyond their subjects, creating a space to showcase and exalt death".
Duration of the exhibition: 23 September − 11 December 2023
Opening hours: Daily, except Tuesday, 10:00- 18:00 (until 15/10) και 10.00-17.00 (16/10-11/12)
