Historical Archives

The Historical Archives of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation has incorporated and conserves the historical archives of banks that the Piraeus Bank Group absorbed, as well as the archives of important organizations and companies that were connected to them. In this manner, they contribute to the documentation and study of the economic history of Greece in the 20th century relating to agriculture, industry and the banking sector.

The main institutions and structures of the Greek economy, the country's agricultural and industrial over the decades, important aspects of the banking system, the financial compensation of the refugees from Asia Minor, the agricultural cooperative movement, the foreign aid Greece received after WWII and its management are some of the research topics that can be treated satisfactorily by turning to the Piraeus Bank Group's Historical Archives.

In the Piraeus Bank Group's Historical Archives you will find a significant number of collections, among which:

  • archives of the banks of the Piraeus Bank Group (Piraeus Bank, Chios Bank, ETBA, Agricultural Bank of Greece) and archives of organizations that were organically linked to the historical trajectory of these banks
  • archives of companies created by the Group's banks or were acquired by them
  • archives of industrial businesses
  • personal archives
  • archives of collective bodies

The Archives' material is constantly being enriched with new acquisitions made by the Piraeus Bank Group, or by individuals.

Following the additional acquisition of the voluminous archival material of the former Agricultural Bank of Greece, and with the ambition that the Piraeus Bank Group's Historical Archives will live up to international best practices in the field, the reconstruction of a former industrial building in Tavros region (Athens) has been completed to host the reorganized Historical Archives department. Archive-related works are been carried out in its premises, but also activities concerning the research, academic and educational community, as well as the broader public.

Organized according to international archival standards, PIOP Historical Archives is a member of several Greek and international scientific associations. Its digitized collections (Operational Program «Information Society») are accessible at http://archives.piop.gr
