at the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum

The Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP), in the framework of a memorandum of cooperation with the “Ark of the Magnetes for the safeguarding of cultural reserve”, the cultural entity of the Holy Metropolis of Dimitrias and Almyros, on the occasion of the bicentennial celebration of the 1821 Revolution, presents a microshipbuilding exhibition of historical vessels by Antonis Tzoumas, under the title “Legendary ships of the 1821 Struggle” at the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum in Volos.

The exhibition highlights Greek seamanship, maritime trade and activities at sea during the period of Ottoman rule, through the miniature replicas of the historical vessels that participated in the Revolution. Visitors of all ages will have the chance to see models of ships built to scale as copies of the original ones, made from wood, bronze, steel and other materials, in a presentation of the history of the Greek Struggle for Liberatio through the stories of their captains and the lands where they fought.

Antonis Tzoumas was born in Volos in 1944. His love for the sea and the naval tradition for more than forty years lies behind his research and studies on Greek and European traditional shipbuilding. Since 1971 he has been actively involved in the creation of wooden models of sailing ships, having crafted more than 100 different models, while some of them have won awards in contests of the Greek Association of Modeling.

Duration of the exhibition: 8 September-18 October 2021
Opening hours: Daily, except Tuesday, 10:00-18:00 (until 15/10), 10:00-17:00 (from 16/10)
