In the context of its memorandum of cooperation with Magníton Kivotós, the “Ark of Magnesia for the preservation of the cultural reserve”, the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) is inaugurating an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Vassílis Kapodístrias titled “Ships landless lands” at the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum N. & S. Tsalapátas, in Vólos, on Saturday 14th July (at 8pm).

Fellow artist and author Kóstas Loudovíkos will introduce Vassílis Kapodístrias’ work, while those attending the opening will have the opportunity to enjoy a musical interlude with María Vláchou on the violoncello.

Vassílis Kapodístrias was born in Vólos in 1957. As of 1974, he began to express an interest in art by participating in photography seminars, while from 1985 onwards he started working systematically with various mixed technique materials. His sculptural constructions symbolically represent lost cities that were once vibrant and full of life. The remains of formerly bustling towns form the present exhibition’s central core, with the ship as both a means of expressing collective memory and a critical approach to our times’ social, economic and political contexts. The works were created with plastic materials, which allow the construction of volumes with forms full of rich textures, colours and transparencies. The lost cities and the ships presented here portray a pulsating world, which surpasses a simple graphic representation, in an effort to awaken, at the same time as charm, the spectator.

The exhibition runs from: the 14th July through to the 30th September 2018.
