The European Museum Academy Awards at the Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production of Lesvos

The Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) is co-organising, from Thursday 19 through to Saturday 21 May, the annual meeting of the European Museum Academy (ΕΜΑ) and the award ceremony of the Luigi Micheletti, DASA and Heritage in Motion Awards, at the Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production of Lesvos.

These awards are among the most important international distinctions for innovative museums focusing on technology and the sciences. More specifically, the Micheletti Awards were established in 1996 by the Luigi Micheletti Foundation, which specialises in 20th century history, and their aim is to showcase the excellence in the sector of new generation museums. Τhe Heritage in Motion awards are an initiative of EMA and Europa Nostra, empowered by Εuropeana, and concern the applications of new technologies in the area of tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

Except for the award ceremonies, the Meeting’s agenda also comprises exhibitions, seminars, lectures and presentations concerning the contemporary trends of the science of museology, in particular in relation to the International Council of Museums’ 2016 celebration of «Museums and Cultural Landscapes». Furthermore, participants will have the opportunity to get to know the island, its museums and history.

The choice of the Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production of Lesvos among PIOP’s Museum Network is not fortuitous. Indeed, as PIOP’s chairman, Sofia Staïkou, specifies: “We fully perceive the need to support Lesvos and its inhabitants, who for many months now have made every endeavour to help the refugees and migrants arriving on their shores.”

In this context also, the chairman of the European Museum Academy, Wim van der Weiden, for his part points out: “The mission of any museum is to be a bridge across time, continents and people, and to stimulate dialogue in the spirit of mutual understanding and respect. This is the reason why in these hard times it is important to have the annual conference of the European Museum Academy on Lesbos.”

 

Except for the warm response of the local authorities and agencies and the society of Lesvos, a significant role in the organisation of this event was played by PIOP’s collaboration with the University of the Aegean, the Museum Network of Lesvos, as well as the Tourism Bureau of Molyvos.
