"’21 allios: The Greek Revolution through
PLAYMOBIL figures and dioramas"
Exhibition in the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum Ν. & S. Tsalapatas

In the framework of the Anniversary Activities by Piraeus Bank for the bicentennial of the 1821 Revolution, the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP), in collaboration with the National Historical Museum (NHM), presents the temporary exhibition: ‘21 allios’: The Greek War of Independence through PLAYMOBIL figures and dioramas" in the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum Ν. & S. Tsalapatas, in Volos.

The PLAYMOBIL dioramas and the figures are used for an original approach to the events that took place from the pre-revolutionary years until the establishment of the Modern Greek State. Small colourful figures “compose” battlefields, “recreate” historical events, describe scenes of everyday life, depict significant people of the Struggle.

The Oath of Filiki Eteria, the siege of Tripolitsa, the exodus from Missolonghi and the flight from Parga are some of the prominent dioramas in the exhibition. Leading figures of the Revolution, Greeks, Philhellenes and Ottomans, men and women who played key role in the course of events, are displayed as PLAYMOBIL figures, with a short biography of each provided as well. Thus, the narrative becomes visual, imaginative and easily understandable, and history becomes a delightful journey for young and old!

The exhibition was first designed by the NHM, where it was held for the first time (13.10.19–13.09.20), in collaboration with a team of collectors and the support of PLAYMOBIL Hellas. In the framework of the collaboration between the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation and the National Historical Museum, the exhibition started its journey from the Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil in Sparti (14.10.2020-31.5.2021), it was transferred to Lesvos (16.06.2020-17.10.2020) and now completes its successful course in the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum N. & S. Tsalapatas, in Volos.

Design-construction of dioramas: George Aggelidis, Dennis Vagopoulos, Angelo Giakoumatos, Vasiliki Fati.
Design-creation of individual custom-made figures: Stelios Mylonas.

In the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum, a brief audiovisual production in the exhibition presents the collectors and highlights from their years of involvement with the PLAYMOBIL figures, also showing how a small figure from a favourite game becomes a hero of the 1821 Struggle.

Duration of the exhibition: 1η November 2021 to 31 January 2022
Opening hours: Daily except Tuesday, 10:00-17:00
Closed: 6 December (local feast day), 25 and 26 December, 1 January
